Inclusive GST Formula

When GST is already embedded in a price, use this formula to extract the tax component:

Taxable Value = Total Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate)
GST Amount = Total Amount − Taxable Value

Worked Example — 18% GST Inclusive

A software subscription is listed at ₹5,900 inclusive of 18% GST. Find the taxable value and GST breakdown.

1

GST-inclusive price ₹5,900

2

GST rate 18%

3

Taxable Value = 5900 × 100 ÷ (100 + 18) ₹5,000

4

GST Amount = 5900 − 5000 ₹900

5

CGST (intra-state, half of GST) ₹450

6

SGST (intra-state, half of GST) ₹450

Frequently Asked Questions

What is inclusive GST?
Inclusive GST means the price you see already includes the tax. For example, if a product is priced at ₹1,180 and includes 18% GST, the actual taxable value is ₹1,000 and the GST component is ₹180.
How do I calculate GST from a GST-inclusive price?
Use the formula: Taxable Value = Total Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate). For example, ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% GST: Taxable Value = 1180 × 100 ÷ 118 = ₹1,000. GST = ₹180.
Is inclusive GST the same as reverse GST?
Yes — mathematically they use the same formula. "Inclusive GST" refers to a price that contains tax, and "reverse GST" typically refers to the action of extracting the tax amount from such a price. Both are solved with: Taxable Value = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate).
When is GST quoted as inclusive?
Consumer-facing retail prices, hotel tariffs, restaurant bills, and e-commerce listings often quote GST-inclusive prices (MRP). The invoice should still show the breakup: taxable value + GST.
Can I use this for 5%, 12%, or 28% GST rates?
Yes. Select the appropriate rate from the slab chips — 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% — or enter a custom rate.
