Exclusive GST Formula
When GST is added on top of a taxable value:
GST Amount = Taxable Value × (Rate ÷ 100)
Final Amount = Taxable Value + GST Amount
CGST = SGST = GST Amount ÷ 2 (for intra-state)
Worked Example — Freelancer Invoice at 18% GST
A consultant raises an invoice for ₹25,000 for professional services. GST at 18% is charged separately (exclusive). The client is in the same state.
1
Taxable value (service fee) ₹25,000
2
GST rate (professional services) 18%
3
GST Amount = 25000 × 18 ÷ 100 ₹4,500
4
CGST (intra-state, 9%) ₹2,250
5
SGST (intra-state, 9%) ₹2,250
6
Total invoice amount (25000 + 4500) ₹29,500
Frequently Asked Questions
What is exclusive GST?
Exclusive GST means the quoted price does not include GST — the tax is calculated and added on top of the base (taxable) value. For example, a service priced at ₹1,000 exclusive of 18% GST will cost the client ₹1,180.
How do I calculate GST on a taxable value?
GST Amount = Taxable Value × (Rate ÷ 100). For ₹1,000 at 18%: GST = ₹180. Final amount = ₹1,180.
What is CGST and SGST in exclusive GST?
For an intra-state transaction, the GST amount is split equally: CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2. On ₹180 GST, CGST = ₹90 and SGST = ₹90.
When do I use exclusive GST?
B2B invoicing typically uses exclusive GST — prices are quoted without tax and the GST line is shown separately on the invoice. Freelancers, agencies, and manufacturers commonly issue exclusive-GST invoices.
